What would be easier for a little home-made flying machine, plane or helicopter?
I want to try make a little home-made flying machine either a lawn mower engine, or pedal power, and I just want to know what would work better/be cheeper for fule/energy, to designe it like a helicopter, or more like a plane, with wings and a rudder?
An AIRPLANE is always much simpler
to design, build, and fly than a helicopter.
UNLESS you are an almost super-human athlete
for powering a Human Powered Aircraft (HPA), forget it ...
UNLESS you have a real knowledge of aeronautics and engineering,
you should probably stick with a kit or plans homebuilt airplane ...
BTW -- I think some others may be thinking of the CRI-CRI
(short for cricket) -- It's not only the smallest airplane in the world,
it's also the smallest twin-engine aircraft.
Some people have used this engine:
http://www.desertaircraft.com/engines_detail.php?Page=DA-150
And the Cri-Cri is now available as a 4-engine aircraft.
See this link with photo:

A member of my EAA chapter 106 (www.EAA106.org)
owns a twin-engine Cri-Cri. It's an amazingly small plane
and I believe it's smaller than some of the large-scale RC's.
BUT -- This is NOT a toy ... It's a real plane for a pilot ...
Here's a video link showing a twin-engine Cri-Cri
flying in Switzerland in formation with a bi-plane:
And if you know some really brilliant guys with LOTS of money,
time, and talent, there is a prize for the 1st human-powered
helicopter. http://www.vtol.org/awards/hph.html
Why so much prize $? Because it's sooooo difficult, it will
be awhile before someone accomplishes the design and then it
will take a super-human athlete (more super-human than for HPA) to power it ...
