Best tool for shaft seal removal?
My girlfriends transmission is leaking, at an alarming rate. Most of the accumulation is between the bell housing and the flywheel cover. I'm guessing a main shaft seal or a near catastrophic failure of the torque converter. Either case, I'm probably replacing both.
The reason I also suspect the shaft seal is that the transmission (used) was just recently installed, and I'm betting that if there's no shaft damage from a previous installation, it just sat too long before we poured the coals to it. So what tool is preferred here? I'm thinkin' it's gonna take more than just a seal pick.
This car's also having trouble shifting, which aside from low fluid level, could be a bad lock-up solenoid, or a bad torque converter, or a bad TPS. 96' Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder, 2.4L SOHC.
I would have the transmission checked by a pro before going through all the trouble of changing the seal, the seal may have been damaged during install but usually that means the torque converter wasn't seated properly when the bell-housing was bolted tight damaging the seal and usually bushing and pump.
I usually bend my least favourite screwdriver when a pick don't work to remove the seal.
