Is it safe to resolder multiple sets of LED Xmas lights end to end & use 1 power supply? Each set has 36 LEDs.?
I have 8 sets of LED Christmas lights, each set has 36 LEDs and a power supply. But it's only 9ft long. I was thinking of splicing and soldering them together end to end to make hanging them up and powering them easier. The power rating of the adapter is 3V @ 1A. I'm not an electrical engineer but hoping there's one out there that can let me know if this is safe to do. Thanks!
Also, as a side note, is this correct?
3 volts x 1 amp = 3 watts
So, if each set is using 3 watts, then all 8 are using 24 watts? That seems very inefficient for LEDs, right?
It depends on the wiring and how you would connect them together. The power of 3 volts at 1 amp means the LEDs are actually in parallel, and there are two conductors running the length of the string to connect to all the LEDs. So to connect the strings together, you would solder the two wires at the far end to the two wires of the next string. etc.
You have two problems. The wires would be carrying 8 amps instead of 1 amps, and that would be very dangerous. The second is that you need a 3 volt 8 amp supply.
But the main problem is the wires. I don't know what size they are at present, possibly something like #22 or #20, and those would overheat, possibly melt, under this overload. You could have quite a fire.
