are my tie rod ends bad? pivot joint?
ok so i was just doing the bearings on my 01 pt and i noticed the ball joint (or the pivot joint as the pep boy guy told me) looks like a ball joint to me but w/e so anyway i checked it like i check ball joints i grab the grease nipple and if it wiggles i replace it . my pivot joint wiggles like this but if its not a ball joint does the same rule apply. if it is i need to get it done today because after my bearing job it needs a desperate alignment but i dont want to have to do it twice.
Yes, the thing you described with the grease fitting is a test of the joint used by some manufacturers. Another, more universal way to check it is to simply grab the tie rod end near the joint, and press it toward the steering knuckle, and pull it away, back and forth. If you see any appreciable movement (besides the normal axial swivel movement) between the 2, it should be replaced.
