can you put a supercharger, cold air intake, and a twin turbo in at the same time in the same engine?
my friend says he has a gto judge with a supercharger, cold air intake, and a twin turbo. i told him that its impossible to have all 3 of those at the same in the same engine and have all of them work. not to mention he put a supercharger under the engine. and i need sumbody to help me clarify that he is lying.
You indeed can supercharge and twin turbo a car, but a cold air intake is not in there. A positive displacement supercharger sits on top of the intake manifold (typically), and makes peak pressure at low RPM's. Turbochargers require more RPM to make peak boost, and the larger the turbo, the more exhaust it takes. Also, positive displacement superchargers work differently from turbochargers. Turbochargers compress the air, then move it into the engine, while positive displacement superchargers just pump the air without compressing it. Thus, the previous post about it making around 200psi is incorrect. In fact, this exact thing has been done successfully many times.
Basically, the supercharger, making say, 10psi of boost, will create much more exhaust energy, which will spool a large turbo much sooner than without the supercharger. Then, above said 10psi, the turbocharger takes over, essentially, putting power back into the engine by turning the supercharger and creating more boost, say 20psi.
Compound turbocharging is how to achieve a 200psi or higher level. You have one large turbocharger making say, 20psi of boost (or, in turbo terms, 1.36 BAR, or pressure ratio). That compressed air gets fed into the inlet of a second, smaller turbocharger, running a 1.0 BAR setup. A 1.0 BAR(14.7psi) turbo setting would double the pressure to 2.72 BAR, or about 40psi. Run the second turbo at 2 BAR, and you're at 60psi, etc.
