how can I power a 7.2 volt cooling fan with a 9v battery safely?
I want to power a 7.2v cooling fan with a 9v battery but what resistor would I need to use to do this becuase I dont want to seize the motor or burn it out. Here are the specs of the cooling fan

If I were you I would use a 1.8V zener diode.
A zener diode when reversed biased gives you a constant voltage drop across it (in theory) independent of the current. The reality is there will be a curve and the diode will drop say 1.7V at 1mA, 1.8V at 20mA, and 2.0V at 250mA. If it is a 1.8V nominal zener, you will get 7.2V nominal with a 9V battery. As the battery discharges its voltage will drop and the zener output will drop as well (the zener defines the drop between the input and output). That way it will work until your 9V battery gets down to 6.8V (at that point it is dead-er than dead).
That being said you have to get a beefy zener because it has to dump a bunch of power. You will have 0.28A being dropped 1.8V P=volts x amps so you need a zener that is rated to at least 1/2 Watt.
That all being said, I would NOT use a 9V battery to power this fan. it will work, but will probably last 10 minutes. 9V batteries do not store very much energy, and that fan uses a lot of energy. What I5 would do is use 4 "C" cells. You can buy a cheap battery holder that holds the 4 batteries and gives you a + and - wire out. C cells are 1.5V each so the output will be 6V, and that allows the batteries to discharge quite a bit (1.2 5V each) before your fan dies. It will last longer, be more cost effective, and have the added bonus of not wasting energy into a little 1/2 Watt heater. If "C" cells are too big or weigh too much, use 4 AA's or AAA's. Wasting energy as heat is never a good solution.
