Flight Simulators for PC?
I was thinking of getting me a flight simulator for my new laptop.
I was thinking along the lines of starting off in a light aircraft and then advancing to helicopters and jet fighters or/and commercial planes.
I'm not interested in space ships!
Does anyone know of any decent titles?
Perhaps you could also suggest where I could possibly pick up some second hand deals.
The graphics card on my new computer is nothing short of superb so I want something to suit if possible.
As regards memory etc. I have ample.
4GB RAM
500GB Hard Disk
Also please note that whatever I buy has to run in Windows 7 and I would like to take full advantage of that.
Flight Simulator X is ok but it's not the greatest for combat, and not for user-created content either.
One of the more popular ones is X-Plane. It's FAA-certified and has a nice plane creator.
For world war 2 combat, IL-2 Sturmovik. Wings of Prey is the latest PC title. It's the same game as the console game Birds of Prey, but has a lot more content. For jets, Aces High has a good reputation.
Hawx is not a flight simulator, avoid it, unless you want to develop a lot of bad habits to break when you switch to a real sim.
There is an excellent flight sim completely free called Flight Gear. Find it with a search engine and download it. It's exact down to the smallest details of flight, and you can download map sections for anywhere, for the entire world if you have enough hard drive space.
A free ww2 combat sim called Targetware is also extremely true to life, even more detailed than IL-2, you have to use the cockpit instruments, no HUD, manually switch fuel lines, drop external tanks, manually switch weapons, manually set flaps, manually set cooling flaps, and so forth.
