RC Glow engine help?
I recently mounted a brand new OS 40 LA glow engine on my 5 month old trainer...which used to be powered by a smaller ASP 25, but as I started the OS engine, my airplane started to drift to the right because the engine was causing a LOT of vibration....IS THIS NORMAL?? and is this SAFE to fly?? cause I have a feeling the aircraft will roll as soon as it takes off.
opps engine is OS MAX 40 LA not the OS .40 version engine
Engine vibrations do not make an aircraft to drift. The engine, however, should not vibrate and I suggest you start in the following sequence:-
1. Check the propeller for balance. Take it to your local model shop and they can do it for you. Also check the propeller is fixed tightly and centered.
2. The engine mount may be loose or too weak to handle the bigger engine. Check for looseness by shaking and for strength by trying to move the engine up/down/sideways. The mount should feel rigid and strong.
3. Check engine and engine mount bolts are fully tight.
If you are 'breaking in' the engine and running it rich (as recommended) then it will vibrate but not to the extent of drifting the aircraft.
If the above does not cure the problem, then you can come to me at al_sheda@yahoo.ca
Good luck and happy landings.
PS: It is neither normal nor safe to fly with a vibrating engine. The fault must be rectified.
