How do I make a super fast, long range airplane? ?
Maybe something on the lines of an arrow. Something that slices through the air like a hot knife through butter.
I have a lot of hours in Arrows. They're really not much faster or longer ranged than other Cherokee's.
That may not be what you meant, so let's continue. Any aircraft design is a compromise. You can not gain something without giving up something else. Super fast and long range are conflicting requirements. The faster you go, the more fuel you will have to burn.The more fuel you burn, the shorter your range.
There are 2 ways to to increase range:
1. carry more fuel. This will make the plane heaver and slower, and reduce the amount of payload it can carry.
2. Make it the design as aerodynamically efficient as possible, so it can fly using less fuel. The most efficient design has as long a wing as possible. Look at sailplanes -some can travel hundreds of mile using no fuel at all.
In theory the most efficient shape for an aircraft is the flying wing. That's shape you are looking for: not an arrow, a boomerang!
