Is this a decent computer?
My friend builds himself a new computer every 6 months, each much better than the last. He doesn't like selling his custom computers, so he is giving me this one for free. I was just wondering if this is a decent computer. Will I be able to play World of Warcraft with it?
PROCESSOR: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 6MB L2 cache overclocked to 4.2GHz per core
Motherboard: Asus Maximus Formula SE
CPU Heatsink/Fan: Zalman 9700
OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit
MEMORY: 4GB DDR2 Corsair Dominator 800Mhz overclocked to 1066Mhz 5-5-5-12 timings
HARD DRIVE: 750GB SataII Samsung 7200RPM 32MB cache
VIDEO CARD: 2 ATI Visiontek Radeon HD3870's 512MB DDR4 256-Bit in Cross-Fire
OPTICAL DRIVE: Pioneer SATA DVD/CD Read/RW
MONITOR: Samsung 932GW 19" Widescreen
SOUND CARD: M-Audio Revolution 5.1
CASE: Thermaltake M9 with all fans in
POWER SUPPLY: CoolerMaster RealPower Pro 750watt
Several things:
The Radeon HD3870 you chose has a fan heatsink that just circulates air around the GPU. If you are going to run two of those in Crossfire, remember each card will be generating 95 watts of heat. I would recommend you get two HD3870s with ducted coolers that will expel the hot air out of your computer case rather than just recirculate it inside your case. Get the HD3870s from either MSI, Diamond or HIS-- Those have the ducted coolers.
Also, the HD3870 is a 55-nanometer card, VERY power-efficient. Each card will pull just 95 watts, and your CPU will pull just 65W. Add them all together and your GPUs + CPU will only draw 255W, plus another 80W from the rest of your system. Your total maximum system draw is only 335W.
A 750W PSU is way too much power, and the excess 400W of unused power will generate A LOT of waste heat.
An 80-Plus-Certified 450W PSU is the best fit for your configuration: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139003
Hope this helps.
